Beginning March 5th, 2012!
Are you an artist struggling to improve as a painter? Don’t despair. Help is on the way!
“How to Improve Your Paintings” with Jim Glover
Are you a beginning or frustrated artist? Do you feel like you are “stuck” and don’t know how to improve the quality of your work? Do you “finish” a painting, yet feel like something just isn’t “right?” Not sure what area of the creative process is giving you the most difficulty? Do you select good subject matter? Can you mix the right colors? Do you paint correct values and edges? Are you designing a pleasing, eye-catching composition? Are you accurately drawing your image on your surface? Do you even know what supplies you need to get started, and where to buy them without art store overload (or even worse, over-buying)?
If you’ve asked yourself even some of these questions, and are not sure where to turn, perhaps this could help. Each of these questions will be covered at length in a series of classes taught by Columbus artist Jim Glover, Vice President of the Worthington Area Art League, and member of the Ohio Plein Air, OPAS (Ohio Plein Air Society), and Oil Painters of America. Jim worked as an artist/illustrator with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for over 30 years, and has been painting in watercolor, acrylic and oil for 45 years. Check the quality of the paintings on the rest of his website to see if you think he might be able to help you.
Classes are designed for someone with a bit (maybe almost none) of painting experience in oil, acrylic, or watercolor, who feels a need for specialized instruction to help him/her grow to a new skill level. A brief discussion of a weekly topic will usually be followed by a demonstration. Each artist will then work on their own projects, with one-on-one personal attention and constructive individual and group critiquing in an up-beat, friendly and positive environment. Any and all questions are encouraged so all participants will learn from the discussions.
Week 1 • Materials / Planning Your Picture and How to Start a Painting
Week 2 • Color Mixing and Matching with a Limited Palette
Week 3 • Improving Your Compositional Skills
Week 4 • Learning Values, Color Temperature and Edges
Week 5 • Working with the Figure and Portraits
Week 6 • Painting Outdoors “En Plein Air” or Working From a Studio Still Life
In considering previous sessions, one of the ongoing shortcomings was the length of the class itself, and the length of the series of classes. We've decided on classes lasting 3 hours and running for 6 weeks. On occasion (like every week?) the discussion and demos at the beginning of the class time run longer than anticipated and we end up short of time for participants to work on their projects. Those of you who have attended one of my classes before know that we usually start early and run late so you’ll have at least 18 hours of class time.
Time slots available are:
Monday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Monday afternoons, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Monday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tuesday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday afternoons, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Cost for the 18 hours of instruction over 6 weeks: $200.
So, here's how it works. We'll need a minimum of 4 participants (max. of 7) to confirm a class. Phone or email us with with your interest to register for any class time that might work for you. When we have enough folks to put together for a class in a given time slot, we'll notify all those involved. I realize the time I've given you to register is relatively short, and apologize, but we are facing knee replacement surgery for my wife in the next month, and have had to wait for doctor and hospital schedules to be confirmed. We'll do our best to group folks into classes and keep everyone (hopefully) happy. Please contact me with any questions or issues at (614) 451-9423, or at jgloverart@mac.com. Looking forward to meeting you at our first class, and having a great time growing together as artists! Thanks for your interest!
A supply list and questionnaire will be sent out to applicants on request, and Jim would love to see some samples of your work so he can better evaluate your painting strengths and specific areas we can work on together to improve.

“How to Start Making Art” with Jim Glover
How to Start Making Art will be an introduction to the picture-making process. This is “Art For the Absolute Beginner,” or for those who’d like a “refresher course” on the basics. Starting with pencil and charcoal, we'll work on how to draw out a realistic image of the subject. During the six weeks we'll progress through to colored pencils, then to painting our subject in watercolor and, depending on proficiency levels, into acrylics, as well. Yes, you'll make a couple of nice pictures to take home and put on the refrigerator (or walls)! Same stuff applies as above. Please specify which class interests you.
Thanks very much for your interest, and I hope to meet you soon!
