Special Meaning

Today I finally dug out a plein air painting I did late this summer in Wheaton, Illinois. My wife is a MAJORC.S. Lewis enthusiast (I'm a fan, but have not read all of his books). I'd heard about the Wade Center at Wheaton College, which is a museum/library that houses a major collection of books, journals, memorabilia, writings, photos, etc. from Lewis, Tolkein, G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Dorothy Sayers, Charles Williams and Owen Barfield--all who were a part of, or an influence on these, "The Inklings," who met for decades in Oxford, England. (Ellen and I were fortunate enough to have been able to visit and eat at the very pub in which they met, while on a trip to see friends in England.)

So for a birthday surprise, I planned a trip for us to the Chicago area, including a chunk of one day at "The Wade." She really enjoyed it, spending several hours seeing Lewis's desk where he wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, the original Wardrobe built by his grandfather that inspired the first book, and even props from the Chronicles and Lord of the Rings movies. After my "fill" of the museum, I went out and set up my easel and painted a 9" x 12" portrait of the front entrance. As I worked, folks from inside would come out and check on what I was doing. The Director asked what I was going to do with it, and wondered about buying it. So today I finished it and sent them a jpg for approval. I'm selling it for a song, so to speak, but what a hoot to have a painting in such a "hallowed" place—it certainly gives it (for me) Special Meaning!
